Pop Sweep: November 24, 2012....

Hey gang, it's time to kick off today's five-part "chart sweeps" of the latest songs making their way on to the weekly music charts at Billboard magazine. I'll start off with the newest on the "pop side" of things.

On the big chart, the Hot 100, which combines airplay from all genres, sales, and internet streaming, Maroon 5 remain on top for an incredible ninth week at #1 with "One More Night", tying Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" for the longest stay at the pole position this year. It's more a lack of competition on the radio than the timelessness of the song that's doing it, though. I honestly compare this song to Rihanna's "You Da One", which also was the second single off her last album, but with bigger singles at the time relatively did modestly. going to #14.

The top debut this week belongs to Atlanta-based rapper Ludacris, who arrives at #72 with "Rest Of My Life" featuring pop/R&B singer Usher and DJ/producer David Guetta. The man born Chris Bridges has hit the pop chart #1 spot two times as a lead artist, with "Stand Up" in 2003 and "Money Maker" three years later. The new track is more dance-club oriented than those other hits, and more like his previous collab with Guetta, "Little Bad Girl"...

Country rocker Jason Aldean comes in at #93 with the followup to his "Take A Little Ride", which made it to #12 earlier this fall. The new song, "The Only Way I Know", features peers Luke Bryan and Eric Church - between the four of them they have 17 top-40 hits on the Hot 100 between them...now tell me how this would be "traditional country" and not rock from thirty years ago?

British boyband The Wanted enter at #95 with "I Found You", the first single from their upcoming third album, Third Strike. The guys went to #3 with their American breakthrough, "Glad You Came". I haven't figured out the reason for the "parental advisory" though I like this much better than the new One Direction song, jus' sayin'...

The final debut on this chart is the latest by Little Big Town, who had their biggest hit this year with "Pontoon", which made it to #22. The four-piece group with heavenly harmonies are back at #97 with "Tornado"...

Meanwhile, over on the Adult-top 40 airplay format chart, Maroon 5 spend a fourth non-consecutive week at #1 with the aforementioned "One More Night"...

Blues-rock singer Grace Potter & The Nocturnals debut at #36 with "Stars". They took "Paris" to #20 here last year...

..as British rockers Muse come in at #40 with their chart-topping Modern Rock hit, "Madness". They've been on this chart once before, taking "Uprising" to #14 in 2010...

Finally, over at the adult-contemporary chart, Gotye and Kimbra hang on for a fifteenth week on top with "Somebody That I Used To Know", and there aren't any debuts on the chart.

That's it for now, I'll be back in 90 minutes with the latest on rock radio..in the meantime my personal top-100 for the week can be found by clicking here...
