Songoftheday 3/2/20 - And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues, and we don't know just where our bones will rest...
"1979" - Smashing Pumpkins
from the album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #12 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 19
Today's song of the day comes from the alternative rock band Smashing Pumpkins, who had landed their first "official" top-40 pop hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with the first single from their double-disc opus Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". The second release from the set would be "1979" a breezy sort of jangle-rock sort of emo-nostalgic look back at earlier days and their frailty written by lead singer/guitarist Billy Corgan who produced the song with Flood and Alan Moulder. With a music video that takes us (and the band) back in time, it seems timeless and fresh at the same time...
"1979" became the second top-40 single and ultimately the highest-charting hit for the Smashing Pumpkins in March of 1996. The single topped both the Mainstream (two weeks) and Alternative (one week) rock radio charts in Billboard, and climbed to #30 on their Adult Top-40 format list. The remix of the track even scored the band their first Dance Club Play hit at #17. Internationally, the single went all the way to #2 in Canada and Iceland, and made top ten in Ireland (#6) and New Zealand (#9). "1979" made the top-40 in Finland (#11), the UK (#16), Australia (#16), Poland (#18), Belgium (#21W/#37F), the Netherlands (#29), and France (#38). At the Grammy Awards in 1997, the song was nominated Record of the Year, losing to Eric Clapton's "Change The World", and for Best Rock Duo/Group with Vocal Performance, which was won by the Dave Matthews Band for their song "So Much To Say".

Here's the band performing in Germany in 1996...
...and at the American Music Awards that same year...
and in concert (not sure of the year)....
And lastly, an acoustic take for radio in 2010...
Up tomorrow: We get introduced to a rap trio from New Jersey that spawned three solo careers in short time.
