Songoftheday 3/13/20 - Don't think I don't see them looking at ya, all of them wishing they could have ya...
"Lady" - D'Angelo
from the album Brown Sugar (1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 11
Today's song of the day comes from the neo-soul singer D'Angelo, who broke into the mainstream and the pop top-40 in American in the summer of 1995 with "Brown Sugar", his ode to the herb. The second single from his Brown Sugar album was a loose jazzy cover of Smokey Robinson's quiet storm classic "Cruisin'", which climbed to #10 on the R&B chart, but didn't quite make it to the pop top-40, peaking at #53. For the third release from the record, the singer went with the love ballad "Lady". Written and produced by D'Angelo with Raphael Saadiq from Tony Toni Tone', the groove was more direct and less drug-induced, so mainstream radio was more into getting on board...
"Lady" became D'Angelo's first and so far sole top ten pop hit in March of 1996. It's his highest charting pop single, as well as on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, where it spent two weeks at #2. Internationally, the single went to #21 in the UK, while in New Zealand it peaked at #15. A fourth single from the project, "Me And Those Dreamin' Eyes Of Mine", rose to #25 on the R&B chart, and stopped at #74 on the pop Hot 100. At the 1997 Grammy Awards, "Lady" was nominated for Best Male R&B Performance, which went to Luther Vandross for "Your Secret Love".
