Songoftheday 3/6/13 - And if she should tell you come closer, & if she tempts you with her charms...

Juice Newton - "Tell Her No"
from the album Dirty Looks (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #27 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's Song of the Day is by the early-80s country-pop hit machine, Juice Newton, who had a really successful 1982, with the release of her album Quiet Lies, which scored three top40 hits with "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me", a cover of "Break It To Me Gently", and the rock-tinged "Heart Of The Night". The following year, Juice released Dirty Looks, a more pop/rock sort of record, and for the first single, released another 60s cover, this time of the Zombies' classic "Tell Her No"...

The single would manage to reach the top-40 in the US and Canada, but it would be her last appearance in that part of the pop chart. It did rise to #14 on the adult-contemporary (soft-rock) chart, and she would go on to have one more top-10 single there ("A Little Love"), but after this relative misfire she would be back to concentrate on country music, and with rewards of seven top-10 singles on the country chart.

Of course the Zombies have the best-known version of the song, written by their singer Rod Argent, which went to #6 in 1965...

Hippie-rock group Smith also recorded a gender-changing take on the song in 1969 which is actually quite good....

More recently, Denver lo-fi duo Tennis released "Tell Her No" as a single...

Up tomorrow: two soul legends have a romance party.
