twostepcub's New Album Roundup 04/09/23....

It's time for my weekly new albums roundup, where I take a look at the big albums on this week's American and British albums charts, along with my choices of the new records I think you should check out. To catch up on this week's singles round, you can click here.

This week Morgan Wallen spends a fourth week at #1 on the Billboard 200 which combines sales and (for better or worse) album or track streaming. There are four new albums on that list, as well as two more on the sales-only chart's top-10

Face (EP) - Jimin
Billboard 200 debut: #2
Billboard Current Album Sales debut: #1
Choice cut: "Like Crazy"

As he claims the first #1 hit on the Hot 100 for a K-pop solo act, the BTS member also claims the top spot on the album sales chart with his short extended play single (which is why it doesn't show on the British list), just five songs with two of them being the Kor-English and English-only versions of the single.

Did You Know There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd - Lana Del Rey
Billboard 200 debut: #3
Current Album Sales debut: #2
Official British Albums Chart debut: #1
Choice cut: "Candy Necklace"

I have to admit the more time goes on the more I feel detached from whatever old Hollywood pastiche Lana is selling. The album is sufficiently gloomy and well-produced, but personally I don't feel gripped by the narratives here, though this one with Jon Batiste breaks that mold.

Growin' Old - Luke Combs
Billboard 200 debut: #4
Current Sales debut: #4
British Albums debut: #5
Choice cut: "Joe"

I will give credit to Combs for not doing the "expanded re-issue" trope and releasing a whole companion second album for his Growin' Up set from last year, although this one is still a bit too long there's much more quality and quantity here, including this uplifting look on second chances.

So Much (for) Stardust - Fall Out Boy
Billboard 200 debut: #6
Current Albums Sales debut: #3
British Albums debut: #3
Choice cut: "Heartbreak Feels So Good"

Lana should take better lessons from the kings of the song titles, who return with their eighth record. And boy, are they welcome back into the depressing sludge of rock music of late to deliver another set of snarky punchy songs that have immediately quotable lines.

Memento Mori - Depeche Mode
Billboard 200 debut: #14
Current Albums Sales debut: #5
British Albums debut: #2
Choice cut: "Caroline's Monkey"

After the death of original member Andrew Fletcher, it was up in the air whether the iconic band would continue, but continue they did, bringing us this treatise on death and mourning that is beautiful if not as immediate as their previous work

Since I Have A Lover - 6LACK
Billboard 200 debut: #24
Current Album Sales debut: #31
Choice cut: "Since I Have A Lover"

The singer and rapper returns with his third album, a collection of richly-textured songs that don't repeat the same musical tropes.

Dark Side Of The Moon: Live At Wembley, 1974 - Pink Floyd
Billboard 200 debut: #49
Current Album Sales debut: #8
British Albums debut: #4
Choice cut: "Time"

The prog-rock icons in their prime is a treat, and this live set is either included on the reissue of the DSOTM album and on its on.

Celebrants - Nickel Creek
Billboard 200 debut: #196
Current Album Sales debut: #17
Choice cut: "Holding Pattern"

The act that brought bluegrass music to a new generation at the turn of the millennium are back after a nine-year break with a stunning new set of songs that expand the boundaries of the genre and are especially intimate.

The Other One - BABYMETAL
Current Album Sales debut: #20
British Albums debut: #32
Choice cut: "Divine Attack (Shingeki)"

The revolutionary band that combined heavy metal with J-pop harmonies sung by women return with their fourth album this time as a duo, but still with a ferocious bite.

Real Gone - Ally Venable
Current Album Sales debut: #30
Choice cut: "Texas Louisiana"

The young blues guitar ace's fifth set includes a fine song with genre royalty Buddy Guy.

The Journey, Part 1 - The Kinks
Current Album Sales debut: #41
British Albums debut: #41
Choice cut: "You Really Got Me"

An ample sampling of the hugely influential work from the British band from the proto-punk beginnings to their working man story songs afterwards. Absolutely essential.

The Art Of Forgetting - Caroline Rose
Current Album Sales debut: #45
Choice cut: "Miami"

The indie-folk singer/songwriter spins compelling tales with their fifth studio album.

False Lankum - Lankum
Current Album Sales debut: #83
British Albums debut: #47
Choice cut: "Go Dig Your Grave"

The Irish folk band goes pretty dark from the star of this second album under the Lankum name, and each song hits the heart like an arrow.

Fever/Sky - Wilder Woods
Current Album Sales debut: #99
Choice cut: "Maestro (Tears Don't Lie)"

The alter ago of Bear Rineheart, the lead singer of the rock band Needtobreathe, should please the fans of Nathaniel Rateliff and the like.

Love & Money - Katie Melua
British Albums debut: #35
Choice cut: "Golden Record"

The Georgian/British singer ponders adult life in this new set good for weekend afternoon listening.
