"More Than A Woman" - Aaliyah
from the album Aaliyah (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18
Today's song comes from R&B singer Aaliyah, whose return to the top-40 with her second single from her self-titled third album, "Rock The Boat", was marked with tragedy, as the artist along with members of her crew died in a plane crash returning from the shoot from the video. The video for the next single, "More Than A Woman", had already been filmed, as it was originally intended to be released prior to "Rock The Boat". Written by Timbaland and Static Major (producer Tim Mosley and songwriter Stephen Garrett), the song is more of a vibe with Aaliyah singing how much of a better lover she will be. And opposed to yesterday's SOTD Ashanti cooing in insecurity, there is no such doubt with Aaliyah here. The music video had the singer and a troupe of dancers on a green-screened digital special effect clip that pervaded R&B music in the 2000s...
"More Than A Woman" became the second top-40 crossover hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in March of 2002, while reaching #7 on their R&B singles chart. On the radio, the song peaked at #19 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #6 on the R&B Airplay list, and #12 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. The remixes of the song, done by the Masters At Work team as well as Grant Nelson as Bump N Flex, helped it score a third hit on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart at #11. Internationally, the single landed Aaliyah her only #1 hit in the United Kingdom, as well as hitting #2 in Croatia, and reaching the top-40 in Ireland (#13), Switzerland (#16), France (#25), Belgium (#31 Wallonia), Germany (#34), Australia (#37), and the Netherlands (#38). (In France the single was listed on the charts with its "B-Side", "I Refuse"). At the Grammy Awards in 2003, Aaliyah was posthumously nominated for the Best R&B Female Vocal Performance category, losing to Mary J. Blige's "He Think I Don't Know".
Although she had already passed, Aaliyah will be back to the series a few more times.
