Songoftheday 4/5/23 - Girl you messed up when you let me in, told your best friend that you wanted me...

"Uh Huh" - B2K
from the album B2K (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #37 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6

Today's song comes from the R&B vocal group B2K, who were assembled in Los Angeles, with three members of another group, Dreaux Frederic, Jarrell Houston, and De'Mario Thornton, along with Omari "Omarion" Grandberry. Houston's cousin Marques was in the similar vocal act of young men, Immature, a decade prior. As they were coming together in the very late nineties, they adopted the name B2K to cash in on the Y2K phenomenon of the entry of 2000.

The group was signed to Epic Records, where they released their eponymous debut album in the spring of 2002. It was preceded by the single "Uh Huh", written by Malik Crawford, Traci Hale, and Tab Nkhereaye along with producer Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. The lyrics have Omarion and the guys hitting up on a girl who apparently told her friend she likes him, then lays out that he's just out for a good time and if they're down, he's game. It's basic, as is the production, but the foursome is cute, so it worked with the younger MTV/BET video-watching crowd, and in return the quartet found themselves with their first hit...

"Uh Huh" became B2K's first hit on Billboard magazine's pop Hot 100, reaching the top-40 in May of 2002, while climbing to #20 on their R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song went to #21 on the Mainstream Top-40 chart, #54 on the R&B Airplay list, and #14 on the dance-oriented Rhythmic format. Internationally, the single peaked at #4 in Canada, and made the top-40 in the United Kingdom at #31 (and almost did it in Australia at #41). The B2K album, released in March of that year, spent a week at #2 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, and topped the R&B Albums list for a week, going on to sell over a half-million copies.

Both B2K and the debut album will be back to the series.
