Songoftheday 7/2/22 -The kids screaming phone ringing, dog barking at the mailman bringing that stack of bills overdue...

from the album Phil Vassar (2000)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #35 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 3

Today's song comes from singer/songwriter Phil Vassar, who grew up in Virginia before moving to Nashville to kick his music career into gear. Phil's success began as a songwriter, with Vassar writing a handful of notable hit singles, including one that made the Hot 100 top-40 in "For A Little While" by Tim McGraw and three that almost did with "Right On The Money" by Alan Jackson and the double-sided "Bye Bye" and "I'm Alright" for Jo Dee Messina. Phil landed his own recording deal with Arista Nashville, where he released his self-titled debut album in 2000. The lead single from the set was "Carlene", an uptempo song about reconnecting with an old flame from school. The single climbed to #5 on Billboard magazine's Country Singles chart, and nearly made the top-40 on the pop Hot 100 list as a crossover. That momentum set Phil up for his follow-up, "Just Another Day In Paradise". Vassar wrote the song with Craig Wiseman, and produced it with Byron Gallimore (Tim McGraw's oft-time guy). In it Vassar sings about a day in the life of an ordinary man with ordinary problems, but with the love of his wife and family its his own paradise. It's corny, yes, but earnestly delivered, and the lite rock-country hybrid suits his laid-back voice, and in return it became an even bigger hit, and as of now his most-streamed song...

"Just Another Day In Paradise" became Phil's first top-40 crossover hit on the Hot 100 in America in December of 2000. The song topped Billboard's Country Singles chart for a week as well. Internationally, the single went to #2 on the Canadian Country chart. The Phil Vassar album, released in February of that year, missed the Billboard 200 sales tally, but spent two years on Billboard's Country Albums list, reaching a high of #23.Both Phil and the album will return to the series.
