Songoftheday 7/19/22 -I've sure enjoyed the rain, but I'm looking forward to the sun...

"Without You" - (Dixie) Chicks
from the album Fly (1999)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #31 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's song comes from the female country music trio the (Dixie) Chicks, whose second major-label album Fly had already scored a trio of Nashville hits that crossed over to the top-40 of Billboard magazine's Hot 100 "pop" chart with "Ready To Run", "Cowboy Take Me Away", and "Goodbye Earl".  The fourth radio single from the record was the breakup ballad "Cold Day In July", whose stark emotion did manage to carry it to #10 on the Country Singles chart but stopped at #65 on the Hot 100. (It deserved much better.)

The fifth offering from Fly also was a ballad that tackled a lost love. "Without You", written by lead singer Natalie Maines with Eric Silver, takes that story to the point after the guy drove away. Natalie mourns her life without them, with broken promises leaving her shattered, betrayed, and hopeless. It's not a fun song, and it's not meant to be, and the Chicks pour their entire heart into it. The music video illuminates the starkness by casting everyone naked in bright white light...

"Without You" became the fourth song from Fly to make the top-40 on the Hot 100 in December of 2000. The song topped Billboard's Country Singles chart for a week as well. Internationally, the single made it to #8 on the Canadian Country Chart before RPM closed shop at the end of the year. The Chicks and the Fly album will be back to this series.
