Songoftheday 7/30/22 - Oh number one there could never be no one like you, how come I feel this way about...

from the album Mikaila (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #25 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 3

Today's song comes from actress/singer Mikaila Enriquez, who grew up in Oklahoma before moving with her family to Dallas, where she began her music career in gospel in the mid-1990s before landing an acting role on the children's public television show Wishbone in 1997, along with a tie-in movie a year later. At the turn of the century, Mikaila, using just her first name for recording, signed with Island Records, where she released her self-titled third album in 2001. The lead single from the set would be the decidedly secular "So In Love With Two". Written by Mikaila with producers Mikkel Eriksen, Rustan Halgeir, and Tor Erik Hermansen, who call their team Stargate (they'll be much more prevalent on the pop scene really soon), the song has her trying to decide between boyfriends in the love triangle she's set up. Mikaila talks about "breaking the rules", and what they do for her, but nothing about what hurt she could be causing. Or then again, maybe she's just casually dating and not tied to anyone yet. Anyway, it's a situation familiar to a lot of young women (and men) and the song became her first (and only) success...

"So In Love With Two" became Mikaila's first and only top-40 pop hit in America in January of 2001. On the radio, the song reached the top-30 on both the Mainstream Top-40 (#27) and dance-oriented Rhythmic (#29) airplay charts in Billboard magazine. The Mikaila album, released in March of that year, missed the Billboard 200 sales tally, hitting the new artist "Heatseekers" list at #20.

A second single from the record, the ballad "It's All Up To You", stiffed, and that was the end of Mikaila's major-label career.
