Songoftheday 7/20/22 -When you rolled up in the Escalade saw that truck you gave to the valet, knew that it was game when you looked at me...

"Love Don't Cost A Thing" - Jennifer Lopez
from the album J. Lo (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 19

Today's song comes from Jennifer Lopez, who went from being a dancer on In Living Color to actress to pop star with her debut album On The 6 which spun off the #1 hit "If You Had My Love" and  top-10 follow-up "Waiting For Tonight". In the autumn of 2000 Jennifer released the lead single from her sophomore effort, "Love Don't Cost A Thing". Written by Damon Sharpe, Amille Harris, Greg Lawson, and Jeremy Monroe, the song paints Lopez as an "un-materialistic girl" who wants passion and demonstrative love over physical things (despite what the tabloids had to say). It totally flies in the face of her public image (especially her relationship with Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs), but the ton of marketing push did the trick and J. Lo rode back into the top ten...

"Love Don't Cost A Thing" became J. Lo's third top ten pop hit in February of 2001. The song climbed to #37 on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 radio chart, and made it to #40 on the R&B singles list. The club remixes of the song helped it place at #9 on Billboard magazine's Dance Club Play chart as well.. Internationally, the single topped the charts in the UK, Spain, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, New Zealand, and Romania, and made the top ten in Belgium (#2W/#7F), Switzerland (#2), Greece (#2), Hungary (#2), Croatia (#2), Sweden (#3), Poland (#3), Norway (#3), Australia (#4), Denmark (#4), Ireland (#4), France (#5), and Germany (#6). The J.Lo album, released in January of that year, went to #1 on both the Billboard 200 and R&B Albums sales tallies, going on to sell over four million copies. Both Lopez and the album will be back to the series.
