Robbed hit of the week 5/2/16 - Sa-Fire's "Boy, I've Been Told"...
"Boy, I've Been Told" - Sa-Fire
from the album Sa-Fire (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #48
This week's 'robbed hit' comes from "Latin Freestyle" dance music singer Sa-Fire, who came from Puerto Rico as Wilma Cosme' before coming of age in New York City. After landing a solo deal after a while as a back-up singer, Sa-Fire released a pair of 12" singles', "Don't Break My Heart" and "Let Me Be The One" (not to be confused with the top-10 hit for Expose'), which made the top-40 on the dance sales chart. The latter appeared on her self-titled debut album, which came out in 1988. The first single sent to radio from the record was the genre classic "Boy, I've Been Told". Written by future hitmaker himself Marc Anthony (then known as Marc Muniz), the busy dance track was highlighted with her dramatic (yet nasal) sending off of a bad lover, and the instrumental intro just pulls you onto the dancefloor...
While "Boy, I've Been Told" climbed to #13 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart, and made it to #3 on the sales chart, the single stalled out at the halfway mark on the American pop chart in November of 1988. She would get her redemption with her next release, the ballad "Thinking Of You".
