Robert Palmer - "Hyperactive"
from the album Riptide (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #33 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's Song of the Day comes from the late English R&B-infused rock singer Robert Palmer, who finally landed a #1 pop hit in America with his single "Addicted To Love". The follow up release from the album (the third single from Riptide) was "Hyperactive", a power-pop rock track written by Palmer with R&B songsmith Tony Haynes and Dennis Nelson, but fit more the keyboard crunch of mid-80s Foreigner and Yes than the soulful groove of "Addicted", and it didn't "grab" your ears like his former single did (and didn't even sport a music video)...

While "Hyperactive" didn't reach the heights "Addicted" did, it was a moderate pop hit in America, reaching the top-40 in July of 1986. The song also climbed to #21 on the Mainstream Rock radio chart in Billboard magazine. Internationally, the only country that it was even a minor hit was in Australia (#72). All in all the tune fits better as a album cut than a full-on single, something he will correct next time out.

Up tomorrow: Roe vs Wade goes to the top of the chart.

I TOTALLY forgot about this song, which is funny to me when I think about how much I played Riptide. It's a fun song, but was never going to set the world on fire. But you're spot on with the follow-up.
