Songoftheday 12/12/14 - I would lock you up but I could not bear to hear you screaming to be set free...
Wham! featuring George Michael - "The Edge Of Heaven"
from the album Music From The Edge Of Heaven (US 1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #10 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8
Today's Song of the Day comes from the British pop duo Wham!, who had released their final album (in Britain actually called The Final) in 1986. From it they scored a top-10 pop hit in the US with "I'm Your Man", and it also included George's first American solo top-10 hit "A Different Corner". The third single from the album went back to Wham! billing, with the uptempo "Edge Of Heaven". With a mix a bondage-ish lyrics hidden under a brassy beat, the song was more attitude and sound than substance...
"The Edge Of Heaven" became Wham!'s final top-10 (and top-40, for that matter) pop hit in the U.S. in August of 1986. The single also crossed over to the adult contemporary radio chart in Billboard magazine, peaking at #22. Internationally, the record topped the singles charts in Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, and their native Britain, where it was released as a "double A-side" with the song "Where Did Your Heart Go". That song would be released separately in the States, where it climbed to #50 on the Hot 100. After that, the pair would amicably split, with George going off for a solo career you might have heard something about.
