Songoftheday 2/2/14 - I've been trying so long to let you know how I feel, so if I stumble if I fall would you help me back so I can make you see...
Phil Collins - "One More Night"
from the album No Jacket Required (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12
Today's Song of the Day is by singer and drummer Phil Collins, who had a prolific 1984, scoring top ten pop hits in the US as a solo artist with "Against All Odds", in a duet with Philip Bailey on "Easy Lover", and as part of his progressive rock group Genesis on "That's All". Phil started the next year by releasing his third solo album No Jacket Required in February (usually a dull month for releases). The first single from the set was the simple and sparse ballad "One More Night", about a man contemplating the loss of a love. The most striking thing about the song is that it was his first that didn't feature his distinctive drumming (or any real drumming, for that matter)...
"One More Night" became Phil's second #1 pop single in March of 1985, while also topping the adult-contemporary radio chart for three weeks. On his rock cred he even reached the rock radio chart in Billboard going as high as #4, the same level it achieved on the British singles chart. Internationally, the single topped the chart in Canada, and went top-10 most everywhere else.
And to top it all off, it was my high school's junior prom song. Awful choice to dance to.

...and again promoting his But Seriously album in 1990...
..lastly from more recently on his 2004 tour...
Up tomorrow: A Canadian rocker is looking for no person in particular.
