Brit Sweep: February 16, 2014...
Hey gang, it's time to cross over the Atlantic yet again to check out the songs making the just-released official sales chart in the United Kingdom this week, as Clean Bandit rack up a fourth week at #1 with "Rather Be"...
Almost making the top spot (it was #1 in the midweeks) is Russo-German DJ and dance music producer Zedd with "Stay The Night" featuring vocals from Hayley Williams of the rock band Paramore at #2. It is his first top ten hit here - he took "Clarity" to #29 in this country...

French A-list DJ and producer David Guetta returns at #4 with "Shot Me Down" featuring Skylar Grey. The track interpolates the Cher hit "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" from 1966, which made it to #3 here. This is David's 18th top-ten single in the UK, he's gone to #1 five times, most recently with "Titanium" in 2011...
The third debut on the chart at #11 is another club track, this time from L.A.'s Le Youth (Wes James), with "Dance With Me" featuring Dominique Young Unique. It's his second top-40 hit in the UK and highest yet. Unique rapped on DJ Fresh's #4 hit "Earthquake"...
London comedian Dapper Laughs (real name Daniel O'Reilly) has his first hit at #15 with "Proper Moist"...
Due to an internet campaign, the Irish Brigade take their recording of the 1981 song "Roll Of Honour", which commemorates the hunger strike of (northern) Irish Republican Army members in jail that led to the death of ten of those prisoners in a standoff with then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher. And just like on her death, the recording of "Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead" made the top-40 but was not played in full by the BBC on their chart show, so was this one, done in protest of the law banning the singing of the song at football matches. It arrives at #33...
Slipping into the top-40 at #40 is Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt from Edinburgh with my "Brit Pick of the Week", her ode to "Selfies". Last year her first top-100 single, "Stay Out", went to #21...
Canadian lesbian twin sister duo (that's a mouthful) Tegan & Sara jump in at #65 with their overstimulated song from The Lego Movie, "Everything Is Awesome" featuring Adam Samberg's comedy music trio The Lonely Island. It's the siblings' first to make the top 100, while TLI have done it twice before, with this new one now their best...
Mariah Carey returns at #87 with her brand new single "You're Mine (Eternal)". In her long career she has only been to #1 twice - with her cover of "Without You" in 1994 (20 years ago!) and again in 2000 in a cameo on Westlife's cover of "Against All Odds"...
"Soldier On", a charity record dedicated to Private Conrad Lewis, who was killed in Afghanistan in service, by Andrew James and The Big Secret Sound, enters the chart at #91...
The final debut of the week is from the Brighton garage rock band Royal Blood with "Little Monster"...
That's all for tonight....I'll return tomorrow with another song of the day, part two of this week's "album sweep", and my "robbed hit" of the week. Cheers!
