6 of the 60s: 2/12/14 (1969)...

60's flashback time is here, and I've got a half-dozen more nuggets from 1969, the year Yasser Arafat was elected leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization...(I've included highlighted links to buy anything you see)..

The Supremes - "Someday We'll Be Together"
from the album Cream Of The Crop (1969)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1
Songwriters: Jackey Beavers, Johnny Bristol, Harvey Fuqua

The young'uns may not know that this technically wasn't a Supremes record; Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong aren't Diana's backup, but rather Maxine and Julia Waters, along with songwriter Bristol.

Blood, Sweat & Tears - "You've Made Me So Very Happy"
from the album Blood, Sweat & Tears (1968)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2
Songwriters: Berry Gordy, Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson

Songwriter Holloway nicked the top 40 in 1967 with this song, but it was the jazz-rock fusion group that made it the classic it is today.

David Ruffin - "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)"
from the album My Whole World Ended (1969)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #9
Songwriters: Johnny Bristol, Harvey Fuqua, Jimmy Roach, Pam Sawyer

For his first post-Temptations hit, Ruffin interpolated a Mendelssohn melody for a dramatic release of emotion.

Mary Hopkin - "Goodbye"
from the EP Goodbye (1969)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #13
Songwriters: John Lennon, Paul McCartney

The Welsh protege of Paul McCartney, who wrote this song for her, gave Mary her second top-20 hit.

Aretha Franklin - "Eleanor Rigby"
from the album This Girl's In Love With You (1970)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #17
Songwriters: John Lennon, Paul McCartney

Meanwhile, the Queen of Soul took this normally mournful Beatles classic to church, making the pain so much easier.

O.C. Smith - "Daddy's Little Man"
from the album At Home (1969)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #34
Songwriter: Mac Davis

This song was written about the son of the divorced protaganist, but it can be felt for anyone with a little one of their own
