Songoftheday 4/29/17 - What's got you so jumpy why can't you sit still? Like gasoline you want to pump me and leave me when you get your fill...

"Unskinny Bop" - Poison
from the album Flesh and Blood (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #3 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's song of the day is from the glam metal band Poison, whose sophomore album Open Up And Say....Ahhhh! was a massive success, spinning off four top-40 pop hits with "Fallen Angel", their Loggins & Messina cover of "Your Mama Don't Dance", the rollicking "Nothin' But A Good Time", and the #1 power-ballad "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". In the summer of 1990 the group returned with their third effort, Flesh and Blood. Toning down their image with a bit less makeup, their first single from the set was the bouncy rock of "Unskinny Bop". Written by the band and produced by Bruce Fairbairn, who approved keeping the nonsensical title lyric that was meant as a placeholder, the track continued their success on mainstream radio...

"Unskinny Bop" became Poison's fifth top-10 pop hit in the U.S. in September of 1990. The single also climbed to #5 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart, their best showing at that time. Internationally, the song reached the top ten in Canada (#3), New Zealand (#3), and Australia (#7), and also made the top-40 in the UK (#15), Sweden (#19), and the Netherlands (#34).

Here's the band performing at the American Music Awards in 1991, where they were nominated for best hard rock artist (losing to Aerosmith) and best hard rock album (losing to Motley Crue)...

...and again in concert in 1993...

And finally, their appearance on MTV's Unplugged in 1990, where CC Deville's guitar work translated to an acoustic guitar is staggeringly good...

Up tomorrow: 9/10th of the law for this hard rock supergroup's last top-40 pop hit.
