Songoftheday 5/3/16 - Oh I bet you were a virgin 'til you let me...

"Early In The Morning" - Robert Palmer
from the album Heavy Nova (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #19
Weeks in the Top-40: 9

Today's song of the day comes from British rock/pop singer Robert Palmer, who had just scored his third solo top ten hit with "Simply Irresistible", the first single from his 1988 album Heavy Nova. For the follow-up he released a cover of an not-to-much-older funk staple, like he did with Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" and the System's "You Are In My System". This time, he mined the Gap Band's 1982 top-40 pop hit/#1 R&B hit "Early In The Morning". The original went to #24, so Robert's version again bested on the charts. The video had him doing a live take with his band...

Palmer's version of "Early In The Morning" made the American top-20 in December of 1988. The song also climbed to #40 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock radio chart. Internationally, the single reached #26 in Australia, and was a minor hit in Canada.
