Pop Sweep: June 4, 2016...

Hey gang, because of the holiday weekend, it's time to play catch up with my weekly "music sweeps" of the notable songs making the charts in Billboard magazine. As usual, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later on move to the newest in rock, R&B, country, and dance music...

On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of sales (like iTunes and Amazon MP3), internet streaming (like YouTube and Spotify), and radio airplay from all formats, Drake climbs back to #1 for a second non-consecutive week with "One Dance"...

Pop songstress Meghan Trainor leaps on to the chart up at #39 with "Me Too", the second single from her sophomore effort Thank You. The first, "No", made it to #3 earlier this year and this week holds at #19. Grade: C-

OneRepublic returns at #67 with the first preview of their upcoming yet-to-be-named fourth album, "Wherever I Go". The song, which nabs my "Pop Pick of the Week", also vaults from #27 to #19 on the Adult Top-40 list. The pop/rock band from Colorado has reached the runner-up spot on the Hot 100 twice, with "Apologize" (with Timbaland) and "Counting Stars". Grade: B

A cut from Australian country singer Keith Urban's new Ripcord album, "The Fighter" featuring Carrie Underwood, punches in at #69. It seems he's gone the full pop-disco route on this one. Grade: C+

Although Chance The Rapper's Coloring Book album was only originally available on Apple Music's streaming service, because of that being included in Billboard's convoluted Top 200 Albums chart he appears at #8 (although it wasn't for sale yet). Two of the tracks make the Hot 100 based on streaming - the better of the two at #93 is "Blessings". Grade: C-

The tenth season of America's version of The Blake and Gwen Show The Voice just ended on the 24th, but since this chart reflects sales from when the semi-finals aired it's not-the-winner Adam Wakefield that enters the chart with his performance of Chris Stapleton's album cut "I'm Sorry" at #94. Grade: C

The X Ambassadors take their top-10 rock hit "Unsteady" to the pop list at #99. It follows "Renegades", which peaked at #17 on this chart. Grade: B-

And now on to the pop radio format charts...

On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Fifth Harmony lands their first airplay #1 single with "Work From Home" featuring Ty Dolla $ign, while Meghan Trainor's "Me Too" comes in at #31...

Electronic-pop duo Timeflies settles in at #40 with "Once In A While". In 2013, the pair went to #6 on the Dance chart with "I Choose U". Grade: C

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, Joe Jonas' DNCE finally makes it to #1 after 25 weeks with "Cake By The Ocean"...

The third single from New Yorkers American Authors, "What We Live For", books in at #35. The first, "Go Big Or Go Home", made it to #22. Grade: C+

Acappella titans Pentatonix team up with pop/R&B singer Jason Derulo for a cover of Shai's 1992 hit "If I Ever Fall In Love". The original peaked at #2 on the pop chart, and #1 R&B. It's their second single from their self-titled fourth full-length album to reach this airplay list - "Can't Sleep Love" went to #24 this past winter. Grade: B

Canadian pop-punk veterans Simple Plan are back at #39 with "Singing In The Rain" featuring duo R. City. Back in 2003 they topped out at #24 with "Perfect". Grade: C+

Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart, Justin Bieber racks up a fourth week on top with "Love Yourself"...

Canadian singer/songwriter Ruth B flutters in at #25 with "Lost Boy". The track is already at #19 on the Adult top-40 list and #30 on the Hot 100. Grade: B+

Mike Posner's former top-5 pop hit "I Took A Pill In Ibiza" finally crosses over to this format at #26. Back in 2011 he peaked at #23 with "Cooler Than Me". Grade: B

A former "Pop Pick", British pop singer Nathan Sykes' stellar "Over and Over Again" with Ariana Grande, slips in at #30.

That's all for the start of today's musical journey...I'll be back with the latest on rock radio...
