Songoftheday 2/7/14 - I feed you I drink you my day and my night, I need you I need you by sun or candlelight...
Animotion - "Obsession"
from the album Animotion (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's Song of the Day is by the new wave group Animotion, whose original incarnation came together in Los Angeles with lead singers Astrid Plane and Bill Wadhams completing the lineup. They released their debut album in 1984, and the first single from the record was a cover of a song originally recorded by its writers, Michael Des Barres and Holly Knight, for the male stripper movie One Night In Heaven starring a post-Blue Lagoon Christopher Atkins. Animotion's version upped the tempo and Astrid and Bill's voices give the song a cooler, tighter, and spacier sheen, helped by John Ryan's production...
"Obsession" became Animotion's first top-10 pop single in the U.S. in May of 1985, while making it to #35 on Billboard's Top Dance Club Play chart. Internationally, the record went top-10 in England, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand.
These days, the song of one of the better-aged of the new-wave one-offs. (even though the band would continue to have a few more hits....)
