8 of the 80s: 2/13/14 (1989)...

I'm ready to serve up eight more nuggets from the 80s, and this week I'm back to 1989, the year the Soviet Union pulled out of  Afghanistan after nine years of military occupation.

Robbie Nevil - "Somebody Like You"
from the album A Place Like This (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: 63
Songwriters: Richard Feldman, Robbie Nevil, Jeff Pescetto

The blue-eyed soulster had a minor hit with this pre-newjack jam. I got into Nevil a lot more than most when I lived in Chicago, especially his debut album.

Shooting Star - "Touch Me Tonight"
from the album Best Of Shooting Star (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak; #67
Songwriter: Van McLain

The Kansas City rock band waited until their greatest hits album to have their biggest hit.

Survivor - "Across The Miles"
from the album Too Hot To Sleep (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #74
Songwriters: Jim Peterik, Frankie Sullivan

The "Eye Of The Tiger" group's final hurrah on the pop chart was this by the numbers mid-tempo rocker.

Dion - "And The Night Stood Still"
from the album Yo Frankie (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #75
Songwriter: Diane Warren

The 60s teen idol made a splash at the end of the 80s with his "comeback" album that sported a bevy of guest stars like Patty Smyth who sings with him on this one.

U2 - "All I Want Is You"
from the album Rattle And Hum (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #83
Songwriters: Adam Clayton, The Edge, Bono, Larry Mullen Jr.

The strings on this closing song from U2's Rattle And Hum were arranged by Brian Wilson collaborator Van Dyke Parks.

Surface - "You Are My Everything"
from the album 2nd Wave (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #84
Songwriters: Everett Collins, Dave Conley, Derrick Culler, David Townsend

Fave of mine Regina Belle guested on this sweet song that topped the soul chart.

The Cult - "Edie (Ciao Baby)"
from the album Sonic Temple (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #93
Songwriters: Ian Astbury, Billy Duffy

This more reflective number from the British goth rockers was inspired by Edie Sedgwick, one of Warhol's own muses.

1927 - "That's When I Think Of You"
from the album ...ish (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #100
Songwriters: Garry Frost, Eric Weiderman

The sole American hit for the band formed by the former leader of Moving Pictures spent just one week on the chart at the bottom rung. Still, it's a hit!
