Robbed Hit of the Week 2/11/13: Berlin's "The Metro"...

Berlin - "The Metro"
from the album Pleasure Victim (1983)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #58

This week's "robbed hit" is by the Los Angeles new wave band Berlin, who along with Missing Persons were the top American true contributors to the genre in the early 80s. Since both were led by insanely attractive females (in Berlin's case, the pre-duotoned hair Terri Nunn), it was a bit difficult telling them apart, and both had a series of "robbed hits" of their own. Their first hit on the pop chart, "Sex (I'm A...)" reached the top-10 on both the rock and dance charts while stalling at #62. The followup, the delightfully moody and dramatic "The Metro", did a tad better...

"The Metro" made it to #58 on the pop list, though unlike "Sex" it missed the dance and rock charts (surprisingly on the latter, since it's such a stronger song in that sense). Of course, the band would do a bit better on their next record, reaching the top-40 with "No More Words" in 1984.

...and here's the band doing it live in 1983...

In the 90s, alt-metal gods System Of A Down covered the song and gave it new life...

That's it for tonight..thanks for stoppin' by, and I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day, candletime, and my French and German music chart recaps. Good night!
