Brit Sweep: February 10, 2013...

Hey gang - it's the end of the weekend, and time to check out the songs making their debut on the official sales chart in Britain this week, as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis conquer yet another country with the anti-swagtastic "Thrift Shop".

The top entry (and only debut in the top-40) is the return of the American alt-rock group Fall Out Boy, whose last time on the chart here was in 2009 with "America's Suitehearts" which went to #76. Three of their singles reached the top-10 previously, and "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" just missed the top spot at #2 in 2007. Their new one, "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark", is at #5 and is a very worthy return. Grade A-

Bruno Mars' follow-up to his #2 hit "Locked Out Of Heaven" is the ballad "When I Was Your Man", which arrives at #46 this week. In this one he's totally giving a Lenny Kravitz vibe here. Grade: B

Singer and runner-up on the first series of the UK version of The Voice Tyler James comes in at #52 with "Worry About You" featuring rapper Kano. Tyler has made the top-40 in Britain three times, with "Foolish" reaching #16 in 2005. Kano also has seven UK top-40 singles to his credit. This new one's got a nice flow, but is a little thin beyond the chorus. Grade: C+

Russian-born EDM musician Zedd now calls Germany his home, and he debuts at #67 with his first British hit "Clarity" featuring Foxes. Grade: B+

Canadian emo rapper Drake returns at #71 with his new track "Started From The Bottom". As a lead artist, he has had two top-40 hits in the UK, with "Take Care" with Rihanna reaching #9 in 2012 (he also went to #1 as a guest on her "What's My Name"). A little defensive of his past on this one he is. (NSFW) Grade: D

Pink enters at #74 with "Just Give Me A Reason" featuring Nate Ruess, the lead singer from alt-rock A-listers fun. She's topped the charts three times in this country, and the two artists are both up for Grammys tonight, competing against each other for Best Pop Album. Grade: A-

The last new entry on the chart this week is by Marina & The Diamonds, who like Florence + The Machine, are really a vehicle for vocalist Marina Diamandis, and she's had four top-40 singles in the UK from her two excellent albums. Her latest, "How To Be A Heartbreaker", comes in at #88. Grade: B+

That does it for today...I'll be back tomorrow with another Song of the Day, candletime, part two of this week's "album sweep", and the robbed hit of the week....Good night!
