from the album 9 1/2 Weeks (Original Soundtrack) (1986)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 6
Today's Song of the Day comes from bass player for Second British Invasion pop kings Duran Duran. John Taylor not only was selling records left and right with the Fab Five, but also as part of the side-project the Power Station with fellow Durannie Andy Taylor and singer Robert Palmer. Besides that, John also collaborated on the soundtrack to the S&M-tinged drama 9 1/2 Weeks starring Kim Basinger and pre-nutso Mickey Rourke. Aside from the score, John also contributed a solo single, "I Do What I Do...", which gave radio and fans a chance to hear him singing lead for the first time, albeit quite restrained and masked by the backup singers on the chorus...
"I Do What I Do..." became John sole solo top-40 pop hit in America in April of 1986, while peaking right under that mark in his native Britain. By the end of the year he'd be back in Duran Duran again, where has has been off and on until today, releasing a couple of small-time solo material. He also starred in the movie Sugar Town with Power Station replacement singer Michael Des Barres.
