Songoftheday 12/8/13 - Your love is like a raging fire, you're a snake that's on the loose the strike is your desire...

Rebbie Jackson - "Centipede"
from the album Centipede (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #24 (three weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's Song of the Day is by the eldest of the Jackson brothers and sisters, Rebbie, who performed with the Jacksons in the 70s, and came to release her solo album in 1984. With some help from brother Michael, Smokey Robinson, and Prince, it was a big-name affair, and the title track used her brother's clout, production, and background vocals by himself, sis LaToya, and Martha Wash and Izora Armstead (aka the Weather Girls) to score a hit with the title track "Centipede"...

"Centipede" became Rebbie's first and only top-40 pop hit in December of 1984, while climbing to #4 on the R&B chart and #29 on the dance club play list in Billboard magazine. She would have a few more soul hits, with "Plaything" her second top-10 in 1988. Ten years later she attempted a comeback with a minor R&B single with "Yours Faithfully"...

The same year of Rebbie's last hit, rap group Brand Nubian sampled "Centipede" on their album track "Let's Dance"...

Up tomorrow: A song about the plight of Vietnam Vets co-opted (of course wrongly) by the GOP.
