Robbed hit of the week 1/2/19 - "Get It Up" from TLC...

"Get It Up" - TLC
from the album Poetic Justice (Original Soundtrack) (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #42

This week's "robbed hit" comes from R&B/Hip-Hop trio TLC, who had been riding a wave of success from their debut album Oooooohhh...On The TLC Tip, which had spun out four top-40 pop hits with "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "Baby-Baby-Baby", "What About Your Friends", and "Hat 2 Da Back". T-Boz, Left-Eye, and Chilli's next move would be a contribution to the soundtrack for a highly-anticipated film. Poetic Justice was a Romeo-and-Juliet-style romance in the streets movie that starred Janet Jackson and rapper Tupac Shakur in their first feature film appearances. While Janet herself would eventually grab a #1 hit from the movie courtesy of her janet. album cut "Again", the first single from the record would be TLC's cover of "Get It Up". The debut single from the Time in 1981, it was written (and originally mostly performed) by Prince, and reached #6 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart...

TLC's take on "Get It Up", produced by Dallas Austin with Tim & Bob, does stray too far from that groove...

While TLC's version of "Get It Up" climbed to #15 on Billboard's R&B chart, the single stalled right under the pop top-40 in July of 1993. Internationally, the single did reach the top-40 in New Zealand at #25.

The second single released from the soundtrack would be the rap track "Indo Smoke" from Mista Grimm, which climbed to #56 on the pop chart and #63 on the R&B list. A third offering, "Call Me A Mack", was our introduction to then teenager Usher, who peaked at #56 on Billboard's R&B chart.
