"Another Sad Love Song" - Toni Braxton
from the album Toni Braxton (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #7 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 18

Today's song of the day comes from soul singer Toni Braxton, who had already landed a pair of top-40 pop hits with her first two singles that were featured in the movie Boomerang: "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" and her duet with Babyface, "Give U My Heart". Right before her self-titled debut album was released, Toni's third single from the set (and unofficial lead-off single) "Another Sad Love Song" came out. Written by Babyface and Daryl Simmons, who both produced the track with partner L.A. Reid, the midtempo break-up track was mournful of a relationship gone wrong yet still pretty damn sensual, putting her ready for the next lover whether she knew it or not. The allusion to the radio playing songs to remind her of her past is a common one, but the flow and her voice keeps your ear on point...

"Another Sad Love Song" became Toni's first pop top ten hit in America in October of 1993. The song also spent two weeks at #2 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart, while becoming her first to reach their Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio format list at #8. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in the UK (#15), Canada (#16), and Iceland (#30). At the Grammy Awards in 1994, "Another Sad Love Song" won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
