"Just Kickin' It" - Xscape
from the album Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha (1993)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #2 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 17

Today's song of the day comes from the female R&B vocal group Xscape, who came together in Atlanta before being discovered by producer Jermaine Dupri in the early 1990s. Dupri, who signed the foursome on to his own vanity label from Columbia, released their debut album Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha in 1993, preceded by their first single and soon to be biggest hit "Just Kickin' It". Written by Dupri with studio partner Manuel Seal, the midtempo new jack swing vibe was smooth enough that mainstream radio started to play the record as well. Lead singer Kandi Burruss sang with a lower, more relaxed voice that her contemporaries that fought to oversing each other, while sisters LaTocha and Tamika Scott along with "Tiny" Cottle gave a more "street" flow to their backup harmonies...

"Just Kickin' It" became Xscape's first top ten pop hit, reaching the runner-up spot in October of 1993. The song spent a month (four weeks) at #1 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart as well. Internationally, the single reached the top-40 in New Zealand at #22, while being a minor hit in the UK (#49) and Australia (#54).
