Elton John - "Wrap Her Up"
from the album Ice On Fire (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #20 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 10

Today's Song of the Day comes from Elton John, who was continuing his early-80's success with his last album Breaking Hearts which spun off three top-40 hits with "In Neon", "Who Wears These Shoes" and the #5 single "Sad Songs (Say So Much)". In 1985, he performed at Live Aid, and enlisted George Michael to sing "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" with him during the show. After that, George further helped Elton out by signing backup on his next album Ice On Fire, Elton's nineteenth studio record. The first single released in America was the campy "Wrap Her Up", a twisted take on feminism that is like the fey counterpart of yesterday's "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves". Meanwhile George sounds like someone's grabbed his balls for dear life...

"Wrap Her Up" became Elton's 26th top-20 pop hit in the U.S. in December of 1985. The single also made the top-40 in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and went to #12 is Elton's native England. However the song is just so embarrassingly trite that it rarely sees the light of day on radio these days. And tellingly, Ice On Fire was the first regular studio release from Elton to miss the top-40 on the albums chart (it stopped at #46).

Up tomorrow: a comedian (super) freaks his way to the top of the charts.
