Pop Sweep: August 2, 2014...
It's time to kick off the first of today's "chart sweeps", checking out the songs making their way on to the various singles charts in Billboard magazine. As always, I'll start out on the pop side of things, then later in the day move on to the latest on rock, R&B, country, and dance radio....
On the "big" chart, Billboard's Hot 100, which combines tallies of radio airplay from all formats along with sales and internet streaming, Canadian reggae-rock group Magic! spend a second week at #1 with "Rude"...
The top debut of the week belongs to Australian "boy-band" 5 Seconds of Summer, who place their fifth song in the top-40 at #24 with "Everything I Didn't Say". Their first album just came out here and is expected to come in at #1 next week. The "offiical" first single "She Looks So Perfect" also peaked at this rank, and sits at #74 in its 16th week. I guess now the 1D/Bieber crowd has moved on...

As the king of musical parody "Weird" Al Yankovic scores his first #1 album with Mandatory Fun, a track from the set, "Word Crimes", makes the top-40 at #39. The record, my "pop pick of the week", is a knock-off of Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines", the "song of the summer" last year. It's his fourth top-40 hit; he's had one each decade, with 2006's "White and Nerdy" going all the way to #9...
Country music A-lister Luke Bryan takes the fifth single from his Crash My Party album, "Roller Coaster", to #88 on the big chart. The first single and title track went to #18 on the Hot 100 last year...
On the other end of the musical spectrum at #89 is the Rich Gang, a rap collective from members of Young Money and Cash Money, with "Lifestyle". Last year they went to #45 with "Tapout". This new one features hip-hop stars Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan...
The last new entry on the Hot 100 at #97 is from Canadian dance music singer Kiesza with "Hideaway", which went to #1 in the UK earlier this year...
...and now on to the pop radio format charts...
On the Mainstream Top-40 radio panel, Norwegian duo Nico & Vinz hang on for a second week on top with "Am I Wrong"...
The sole entry here at #40 is fellow Scandinavian Tove Lo from Sweden with "Habits (Stay High)". The single also jumps up to #50 on the Hot 100...
Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format, the aforementioned "Rude" ascends to the #1 position...
The high debut here at #35 is British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran with "Don't". It follows his "Sing", which peaked at #4 and now stands at #12...
Mary Lambert arrives at #39 with "Secrets", her second solo single to reach this chart. The first, "She Keeps Me Warm", her interpolation of her featured role on Macklemore's "Same Love", went to #20...
And at #40 is neo-house group Clean Bandit with "Rather Be" featuring Jess Glynne. The former UK #1 is finally getting legs in America (to my glee), and leaps to #22 on the Hot 100...
Lastly, on the Adult Contemporary (or "easy-listening") radio chart, John Legend rules for an eighth week with "All Of Me"...
Young singer Ariana Grande makes the "old folks" chart at #29 with her "Problem" featuring Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea. The song made it to #2 on the "big" chart...
That's it for the start of today's musical journey...I'll return in 90 minutes with the latest on rock radio...
