twostepcubchart's Best of 2013: Part One - #100-#91...

It's hard to fathom, but the end of the year is almost upon us, so to wrap up this year, I'm counting down the top 100 songs on my weekly personal chart this year, based on their rank each week they're on my list. I'll run through ten a day until we get to the top spot (I've extrapolated a couple songs to the end of the year)...

#100 - Miley Cyrus - "Wrecking Ball"
from the album Bangerz (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #5 (three weeks so far)
Weeks on the chart: 13

Yes, she was more of a chatter magnet than a music artist this year, but there's no denying this pop power-ballad that seemed to channel all Miley's aggression toward her father/ex-fiance/Disney adversary. And at least she's proven to have enough vocal chops to place her above the Britney/Selena/Ke$ha pop crowd.

#99 - Avant featuring Keke Wyatt - "You & I"
from the album Face The Music (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #31 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 18 (in 2013)

Eleven years after their first two collaborations make the pop top-40, the midwestern soul singers (him from Ohio, her from Indiana) came back with this smooth throwback jam given exposure on Keke's reality show R&B Divas.

#98 - Darius Rucker - "Wagon Wheel"
from the album True Believers (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #29 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 19

Country's sole face of "diversity" settled into this fleshed-out Dylan demo originally done by the Old Crow Medicine Show, and scored his sixth #1 country hit. He's come a long way from being called "Hootie" all the time.

#97 - Krewella - "Live For The Night"
from the album Get Wet (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #10 (one week)
weeks on the chart: 14

Out of the horde of new EDM (electronic dance music) acts to come around in 2013, this Chicago trio featuring sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf did quite well this year, with this party-ready rave conquering radio and the clubs.

#96 - Florida Georgia Line - "Get Your Shine On"
from the album Here's To The Good Times (2012)
twostepcubchart peak: #30 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 18

The crossover-country duo followed up their mega-hit "Cruise" with this ode to the strong stuff. File in the "awesome to two-step dance to" songs.

#95 - Thomas Rhett - "It Goes Like This"
from the album It Goes Like This (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #20 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 17 (so far in 2013)

Nothing makes you feel old like the son of an artist who reached #1 in the mid-90s to be doing the same right now. Luckily for Rhett, his dad wasn't as major of a star to work in his shadow, and this mid-level country-rock hit finally got him into the bigtime - it wasn't only his first #1 country hit but his first to make the top ten...

#94 - Tamar Braxton - "Love And War"
from the album Love And War (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #18 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 16

Hashtag breakthrough. Hashtag reality show rewards. Hashtag classic soul ballad. Hashtag Toni who?

#93 - Thompson Square - "If I Didn't Have You"
from the album Just Feels Good (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #18 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 19

Husband and wife duo go country power-ballad with their first single from their sophomore album. I like the vocal interplay between the two - it seems real.

#92 - Muse - "Panic Station"
from the album The 2nd Law (2012)
twostepcubchart peak: #9 (one week)
weeks on the chart: 13

A nominee for the upcoming Grammy for best rock song in a field dominated by members of the AARP, this track emphasized how much the British band's 2012 album was like their Zooropa.

#91 - Michael Buble' - "It's A Beautiful Day"
from the album To Be Loved (2013)
twostepcubchart peak: #24 (two weeks)
weeks on the chart: 22

I really had higher expectations for the response to the most insanely happy kiss-off track by the trad-pop crooner, but I guess Buble' was too non-controversial or newsworthy to garner pop radio's attention this year. He made up for it by this being huge across the pond in England.

Well that's it for the start of this year's musical throwback....I'll return tomorrow with country's current big star, some Danes take a bite out of the Big Apple, and a 'sister act' goes mainstream...
