Songoftheday 6/9/18 - Because life is short, and before you know you're feeling old and your heart is breaking...
"This Used To Be My Playground" - Madonna
from the albums Barcelona Gold (various artists, 1992) and Something To Remember (Madonna, 1995)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14
Today's song of the day is by Madonna, who had started out the 1990s with her immensely popular but controversial #1 pop hit "Justify My Love", followed by the overlooked top ten dance jam "Rescue Me". Both were from her first retrospective compilation, The Immaculate Collection. She also released her coffee table from hell picture book Sex, and from footage on her Blonde Ambition tour came the massively successful documentary Truth Or Dare. After ditching a role in the movie Boxing Helena, Madonna returned in 1992 with what would be her most successful and critically revered film work, as Mae Mordabito in the women's baseball flick A League Of Their Own. She also contributed a song for the piece that didn't get a place on the soundtrack (contract issues), but proved the evolution of her sound as a 180 from her sexual writing in "Justify My Love". "This Used To Be My Playground", written by the singer with remixing king Shep Pettibone, was a lush orchestral ballad that was perfect end-credits candy...
This Used To Be My Playground brought Madonna back to the #1 spot on the American pop chart for the tenth time. The song also climbed to #4 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the track topped the singles chart in Canada, Italy, Sweden, and Finland, and reached the top ten in Ireland (#2), the UK (#3), Norway (#3), Denmark (#5), Germany (#6), Spain (#6), Belgium (#6), Switzerland (#6), France (#7), The Netherlands (#7), Portugal (#8), Australia (#9), and Greece (#10). In 1992, she grabbed a Golden Globe nomination for best Original Song, which was won by "A Whole New World" from Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle.
