Arcadia - "Election Day"
from the album So Red The Rose (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12

Today's Song of the Day is from the second side-project for members of British new romantic heartbthrobs Duran Duran, whose John and Andy Taylor teamed up with Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson for the Power Station and had three top-40 hits in America. The other three, lead singer Simon LeBon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, and drummer Roger Taylor came together as Arcadia, and recorded their sole album, So Red The Rose, which was released at the end of 1985. The first single, "Election Day", sounded much more as a progression from Duran Duran than the rock-infused Power Station material, though off course Simon's distinctive singing helped a bit. Grace Jones even stopped by for a cameo in the single, and though Roger didn't show up for the video, writer William S. Burroughs did...

"Election Day" became Arcadia's sole top-10 pop hit in America, reaching the same peak as the Power Station's "Some Like It Hot" in December of 1985. It also made the dance club play chart in Billboard magazine at #29. In their native Britain, the record climbed to #7, while also becoming a top-10 hit in Norway, New Zealand, and Ireland.

The band also filmed a nearly nine-minute extended version of the video for the song...

And now I'm on an Arcadia marathon. So Red the Rose is a great album and is worthy of its Duran Duran heritage.
