Eurythmics & Aretha Franklin - "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves"
from the albums Be Yourself Tonight (1985) and Who's Zoomin' Who (1985)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #18 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 8

Today's Song of the Day pairs up two unlikely acts for a hit single celebrating female empowerment. British new wave duo Eurythmics were enjoying a fruitful 1985, with their third hit album Be Yourself Tonight generating two top-40 hits including the top-5 "Would I Lie To You?". Meanwhile, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, made a splashy comeback with her Who's Zoomin' Who album, with two top-10 hits including the #3 "Freeway Of Love". Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart co-wrote "Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves", and after being unable to get Tina Turner, recruited Aretha for the third single from each of their respective albums...

"Sisters..." reached the top-20 on the US pop chart in December of 1985, while climbing to #10 on Billboard's dance club play chart. The record even crossed over to R&B stations, where the single peaked at #66. Internationally, it became Aretha's biggest hit since the 60's in Britain, reaching #9 on the UK chart, top-10 in Ireland and New Zealand, and top-40 in Canada, Australia, Holland, and Germany.
