Songoftheday 3/7/14 - I used to think that love was just a fairy tale, until that first hello until that first smile...

Billy Ocean - "Suddenly"
from the album Suddenly (1984)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #4 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 13

Today's Song of the Day is from Trinidadian singer Billy Ocean, who broke through big in the States finally in 1984 with his #1 "Billie-Jean"-ish single "Caribbean Queen" and electro-funk/pop classic "Loverboy". For the third single from his album Billy released the title track ballad "Suddenly", a sweeping love song not unlike those of Lionel Richie. Written and produced by the artist with Keith Diamond, the song was perfect for lite-pop radio...

"Suddenly" became Billy's third consecutive top-5 pop hit in June of 1985, while also reaching #1 on the adult-contemporary (or "easy-listening") radio chart, and #5 on the R&B format list in Billboard magazine. Internationally, the single went top-10 in Britain and Canada, and top-20 in Australia and the Netherlands.

I guess you could call this Ocean's "Hello".

This cassette probably got more play at the time than any other tape (except Make It Big, because, duh). I shouldn't like this song as much as I do, but it was great to listen to this morning.
