Songoftheday 9/4/23 - There's a new wind blowin' like I've never known, I'm breathin' deeper than I've ever done...

"Somebody Like You" - Keith Urban
from the album Golden Road (2002)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's song comes from Australian country music artist Keith Urban, whose self-titled album released in 1999 went on to score a pair of big radio hits that crossed over to the top-40 of Billboard magazine's Hot 100 with "But For The Grace Of God" and "Where The Blacktop Ends". In the summer of 2002, Urban returned with the lead single from his fourth full-length album Golden Road. "Somebody Like You", Written by Urban with John Shanks (who previously worked with Melissa Etheridge and Stevie Nicks), the lyrics paint the picture of the euphoria around having a new love at a positive time in ones life. It's a bright and shiny song for a bright and shiny feeling, and this was even before he met Nicole Kidman. The production from Urban with Dann Huff is pure adult contemporary pop with a touch of country touches with the banjo appearing throughout, but since Urban's vocals already don't conform to the 'backwoods' trope, it doesn't interfere at all. In return, Keith found himself with a massive country radio hit that carried him back into the top-40...

"Somebody Like You" became Urban's third single to reach the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 in November of 2002. The song spent six weeks at #1 on Billboard's Country Songs airplay chart, lingering on the list for 41 weeks. Internationally, the single went to #3 on Canada's sales chart. The Golden Road album, released in October of that year, peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200 sales tally, while rising to #2 on the Country Albums list, spending over two years on each and going on to sell over three million copies.

Both Keith and the Golden Road album will be back to the series.
