Today's song comes from neo-soul artist Musiq, who had dropped the "Soulchild" part of his moniker for his second album Juslisen, which already had spun off a top-20 crossover hit on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in "Halfcrazy" in the summer of 2002. The second and final single from the record was "Dontchange", written by Musiq (real name Taalib Johnson) with producers Carvin Haggins and Ivan Barias along with guitarist Frank Romano. The lyrics are a profession of love, with the "for better or worse" called into question as his partner questions her worth. He says his love is unconditional, with the chorus starting out..

I mean, it's not doing the "when she asks is she's fat, SAY NO" trope, but his reassurances are delivered so smoothly there's no question but to accept it. The production is smooth soul with a very nice string backdrop, and Musiq doesn't need to go vamping into histronics to get his point across, With a sweet music video that has him and his on-screen love aging through the years, it's a perfect milestone anniversary track that is one of the better songs of the neo-soul movement...
"dontchange" became Musiq's fourth top-40 hit on the Hot 100, and second from the album, in November of 2002, while spending two weeks at #3 on the R&B Singles chart. On the radio, the song topped the older-skewing Adult R&B format, while remixes of the track from the Pound Boys team helped it rise to #31 on the Dance Club Play chart.
