Robbed hit of the week 9/18/23 - Martina McBride's "Where Would You Be"...

"Where Would You Be" - Martina McBride
from the album Greatest Hits (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #45

This week's "robbed hit" comes from country music singer Martina McBride, who crossed over to the top-40 on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 for the fourth time with her inspirational single "Blessed" in the spring of 2002.  Her follow-up, and third single from her Greatest Hits album, was the power-ballad "Where Would You Be". Written by Rick Ferrell and Rachel Proctor (who would go on to have a few top-40 country hits of her own), the song has Martina confronting a cold-hearted partner, and telling him flat out she knows he's thinking of leaving. She doesn't beg him to stay, but rather to tell her the truth so she can get on with her life. The soul crushing moment comes in the bridge where she exclaims...

Have I become the enemyIs it hard to be yourself in my company

The production from McBride with Paul Worley keeps it dark but engaging, much like Brooks & Dunn's excellent "The Long Goodbye". And Martina's voice is simply flawless as usual adding the key change at the right moment...

While "Where Would You Be" spent two weeks on Billboard's Country Songs Airplay chart, and a hefty 30 weeks on the list, the single stopped a handful of notches under the top-40 on their Hot 100 in October of 2002.
