Songoftheday 9/14/23 - Of all the things I've believed in, I just want to get it over with...
"Goodbye To You" - Michelle Branch
from the album The Spirit Room (2001)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #21 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7
Today's song comes from singer/songwriter Michelle Branch, whose major-label debut album The Spirit Room had already scored a pair of pop hits with "Everywhere" and "All You Wanted", with the latter reaching the top ten on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 in the spring of 2002. The third and final single from the record was the breakup ballad "Goodbye To You". Written by Branch and produced by John Shanks, the lyrics clearly show that she wasn't the one who wanted to end things, and the loss of her love is killing her inside. She's realistic that it's over, but that doesn't help the pangs of longing for what she had. It all builds to this critical line in the last verse...
And it hurts to want everythingAnd nothin' at the same time
...which (trust me from experience) is quite a on-the-mark expression. And with her fans and radio nodding in approval, Branch found herself with her hat trick hit from the debut...
"Goodbye To You" reached the top-40 on Billboard's Hot 100 in October of 2002. On the radio, the song peaked at #11 on the Mainstream Top-40 airplay chart and #15 on the older-skewing Adult Top-40 format. Internationally, the single made the top-40 in New Zealand at #32.
Michelle will be back to the series (really soon, actually).
