Songoftheday 9/11/16 - Alone in my room, thoughts of you in my head as I wait...
"Secret Rendezvous" - Karyn White
from the album Karyn White (1988)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #6 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 12
Today's song of the day comes from R&B/pop artist Karyn White, whose self-titled debut album had scored a pair of top-10 pop/#1 soul hits with "The Way You Love Me" and "Superwoman". A third single, the quiet storm jam "Love Saw It" with Babyface, also climbed to #1 but surprisingly missed the pop Hot 100 entirely. So for the fourth release from the set, Karyn went back to the dance floor for the Paula Abdul-ish redux "Secret Rendezvous". Written and produced by Babyface and L.A. Reid with Daryl Simmons, the mid-tempo number featured a fast-delivered rap from Karyn in the middle (just before Paula's own "Cold Hearted" was released as a single)...
"Secret Rendezvous" returned White to the pop top 10 in August of 1989. The single also climbed to #4 of Billboard's R&B chart, while the extra-hot house version and remixes made the song her sole #1 on their dance club list. Internationally, the record went to #14 in Canada, while in the UK, where it originally the second single from the set, got a second chance after its American success and went to #22.
A fifth single from Karyn White, "Slow Down" (another slinky slow jam), didn't reach the pop chart but reached #36 on the R&B list.

Here's the White House mix that took the single to #1 on the dance chart in July of that year...
...as well as my fave, the "After Hours" mix...
...and finally, Karyn performing the song live in London...
Up tomorrow: Teen queen is out of limericks.
