Soul Sweep: April 12, 2014...

We're at the "hump" of today's "chart sweeps", where I check out the songs making the charts in Billboard magazine, and now I'm serving the newest R&B tracks on the radio...

On the main R&B/Hip Hop Airplay chart, Pharrell Williams stays pretty "Happy" at #1 for a third week...

R. Kelly claims the top debut of the week at #38 with "Legs Shakin'" featuring rapper Ludacris. He's had some trouble getting traction on his Black Panties album - this is the fourth single from the set, and while it sounds great, I'm not sure if the overly sexual record will play out in mainstream radio...

Singer and actress Tinashe comes in at #41 with "2 On" featuring rapper ScHoolboy Q. It strives to combine girl-pop a la Arianna Grande with harder R&B grooves like Sevyn Streeter and Jhene Aiko, with SQ providing the vulgarity to her breathy vocals.

The third entry is from rapper Rich Homie Quan with the follow to his breakthrough hit "Type Of Way", "Walk Thru" featuring Problem.

Meanwhile, on the older-skewing Adult R&B radio panel, Pharrell's on top for a second week...

The sole entry at #27 is my "Soul Pick of the Week", Beyonce' with "Partition". After finally being able to sit down to take in her "visual" album in one take, her self-titled effort definitely works better with the videos...

Lastly, on the Rhythmic format, which adds more mainstream dance music to the mix, Jason Derulo spends a second week at #1 with "Talk Dirty"...

Entering at #39 is rapper Young Thug with the execrable weed anthem "Stoner". Jesus, it just sounds like he forgot his words and is just makin' it up on the fly.

I'll come back in 90 with the newest on country radio....Groove on!
