Songoftheday 10/1/17 - Once again we sit in silence after all is said and done, only emptiness inside us baby look what we've become...

"I Don't Wanna Cry" - Mariah Carey
from the album Mariah Carey (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 14

Today's song of the day comes from Mariah Carey, whose landmark debut album had already granted her three #1 pop hits with "Vision Of Love", "Love Takes Time", and "Someday". The fourth single from the record, "I Don't Wanna Cry", was co-written by Mariah with producer Narada Michael Walden (his only writing credit on the record). The lyrics find Carey breaking up with a lover, and trying to stuff her emotions down as a vaguely Latin beat (foreshadowing Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart") sways underneath...

"I Don't Wanna Cry" became the fourth #1 pop hit from Mariah's debut, a first in rock and roll history in May of 1991. In fact, only the Jackson Five had their first four singles top the Hot 100 (albeit from three different albums). The single also spent a week on top of Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio list, and took a week at #2 on their R&B chart. Internationally, the record went to #2 in Canada, and reached #13 in New Zealand, while missing the top-40 in Australia at #49. In Britain, the inspirational and upbeat "There's Got To Be A Way" was released instead, and it was a minor hit at #54.

Up tomorrow: A loud, brash metal band slows down and goes speechless.
