"State Of The World" - Janet Jackson
from the album Rhythm Nation: 1814 (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: did not chart
Billboard Pop Airplay peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks on the Pop Airplay chart: 11
Today's song of the day comes from Janet Jackson, whose landmark album Rhythm Nation:1814 had spun off an incredible seven pop hits including four #1's in "Miss You Much", "Escapade", "Black Cat", and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" as well as three top-5 hits in "Alright", "Rhythm Nation", and "Come Back To Me". Since she was still riding high and hitting #1 with the seventh single "Love Will Never Do", an eighth track from the record was promoted to radio. "State Of The World", written by Janet with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, was a more topical song than the earlier singles, touching on poverty and urban strife, over a kickin' new jack-inspired beat. A physical single wasn't released in the U.S., possibly to get people to buy the album, possibly not to overshadow her brother Michael who tied with her for most top-40 hits from an album (along with Bruce Springsteen as well). Either way, the track was huge on pop radio and would've reached the Hot 100's top ten if a single would've been released....
While "State Of The World" didn't get to be on the "official" American pop chart, Billboard's Hot 100, the song reached the top five on their pop airplay chart in April of 1991. It also made it to #23 on their R&B airplay chart as well. A 12" promotional remix single was given to club DJs, and as a result the track went to #9 on the Dance Club Play list in the magazine. Internationally, "State Of The World" was put out as a CD single in Australia, popping on the chart there at #94. This year, Janet restarted her world tour under the name "State Of The World Tour 2017"...
