Songoftheday 5/7/17 - First, there is no doubt not for a minute, you've always been my heart's number one and number two...

"My Kinda Girl" - Babyface
from the album Tender Lover (1989)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #30 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 5

Today's song of the day comes from R&B singer/songwriter/producer wunderkind Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, who after establishing himself and musical partner L.A. Reid as go-to hitmakers for other artists, parleyed that into expanding his solo recording career as well. His second solo album, Tender Lover, had already spun off three big hits with "It's No Crime", "Whip Appeal", and the title track. The fourth single released from the record would be the the mid-tempo dance-soul of "My Kinda Girl". Written by Babyface and L.A. along with Darryl Simmons, the new jack swing track was a good change of pace for the clubs without having to leave the ladies behind...

"My Kinda Girl" became the fourth top-40 pop hit from Tender Lover in August of 1990. The single was much more successful on urban radio, climbing to #3 on Billboard's R&B chart. Internationally, the song just missed the top-40 in New Zealand (#41).
