Songoftheday 5/6/17 - How many times have I tried to turn this love around? I don't want to give up but baby it's time I had two feet on the ground...

"Release Me" - Wilson Phillips
from the album Wilson Phillips (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #1 (two weeks)
Weeks in the Top-40: 15

Today's song of the day comes from the pop group Wilson Phillips, a trio of daughters of rock and roll royalty who came together to record their own first album at the end of the 1980s. With Beach Boy Brian Wilson's kids Carnie and Wendy and Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle from the Mamas and the Papas, they scored a #1 pop hit on their first try with the inspirational fluff of "Hold On". Their follow-up single, "Release Me", made a cute counterpoint even in the titles, with the band-written song wanting a break up but singing sweet harmonies like some sort of opposite sirens...

"Release Me" became Wilson Phillips' second #1 pop hit in September of 1990, their longest stay on top. The single also went to #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary (or "easy listening") radio chart. Internationally, the song topped the singles chart in Canada, and reached the top-40 in the Netherlands (#14), Ireland (#15), Austria (#15), New Zealand (#18), the UK (#36), and Germany (#37).
