Songoftheday 5/1/17 - Baby I never gave my heart to anyone, used to think that love was a game...

"I Didn't Want To Need You" - Heart
from the album Brigade (1990)
Billboard Hot 100 peak: #23 (one week)
Weeks in the Top-40: 7

Today's song of the day comes from the hard rock band Heart, whose fourth album after their reincarnation into pop juggernauts in the mid-80s, Brigade, had landed them a #2 pop hit with "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" in the spring of 1990. At the same time, two other album cuts from Brigade made the Mainstream Rock radio chart with "Wild Child" spending two weeks at #3 and "Tall Dark Handsome Stranger" making it to #24. The second physical single from the record would, like the second from their last, "Who Will You Run To", be written by song doctor extraordinaire, Diane Warren. "I Didn't Want To Need You" was a slice of mid-tempo adult ruminations on love sung by Ann Wilson...

"I Didn't Want To Need You" became the second pop top 40 hit from Brigade in August of 1990. The single did better on rock radio, climbing to #13 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. Internationally, the single reached the top 40 in Canada (#14), Ireland (#14), Sweden (#15), and Italy (#35), while it just missed that level in the UK at #47.
