German Sweep: April 1, 2014...






Guten Tag, mein Freunde, it's time to cross the border from France to Germany to check out the songs making their debut on the official singles chart, as Mr. Probz spends a third non-consecutive week at #1 with "Waves"...

The top debut of the week at #23 is from Dutch producer and electronica musician Bakermat (born Lodewijk Fluttert) with "One Day (Vandaag)" ("Today" in Dutch), which samples a portion of Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech. It's already topped the singles chart in France, and went to #2 in neighboring Holland and Belgium, so I expect it to do well here as well...

Veteran rap group from Stuttgart Die Fantastischen Vier (The Fantastic Four) return at #38 with "25", commemorating their silver anniversary. In those years they've had a dozen top-40 hits, with "Sie ist weg" ("She Is Gone") topping the German chart in 1995. It features Don Snow (John Savannah), an American vocalist/musician who lives in New Jersey...


Dutch acoustic-pop singer Milow (aka Jonathan Vandenbroeck) is back at #40 with "We Must Be Crazy". In 2009 he went to #2 in this country with his remake of 50 Cent's "Ayo Technology" as a folk-rock song which was quite the awesome...


German rapper Kollegah comes in at #45 with "AK's Im Wandschrank" ("AK's in the Closet")...


Berlin-based indie-folk band Elaiza, who won the German spot at Eurovision with "Is It Right?" (which leaps from #41 to #4 this week), drops in as well this week with two more songs. First at #50 is their "Fight Against Myself", which is my "German Pick of the Week"...


British producer/musician Route 94 (Rowan Jones) takes his former UK #1 "My Love" featuring Jess Glynne to this chart at #53...


Rappers Farid Bang and Bushido team up at #54 with "Goodfellas"...


Santiano, who were a finalist for Germany's Eurovision entry, enter at #69 with one of their two songs from the national competition, "The Fiddler On The Deck"...


Punk rocker Bela B., the drummer and singer from the band Die Artze, lands at #74 with "Abserviert" ("Dumped") featuring Smokestack Lightnin'...


American dubstep king Skrillex jumps in at #79 with "Recess". He previously went to #55 with "Bangarang"...


Eurovision contenders Mariemarie didn't make it, but their second song from the finals, "Candy Jar", is in at #82. The other, "Cotton Candy Hurricane", came in last week at #75 and jumps to #39 this time around...


The other Elaiza song to enter that wasn't in the contest is "Without" at #89...


The final debut of the week is from German house music producer Parra for Cuva with a cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Games" featuring Anna Naklab on vocals. The record was already a top-10 hit in the Netherlands...
