Rock Sweep: September 21, 2013...

Round two of this week's "chart sweeps" is up, sampling the songs making the singles charts in Billboard magazine, and now it's the latest on rock radio....

On the main Rock Airplay chart (which combines all the rock stations monitored by the mag), Lorde reigns for a fourth week with "Royals"....

The top entry of the week at #40 is Coldplay with their contribution to the second "Hunger Games" movie, Catching Fire, titled "Atlas". It's my "Rock Pick of the Week"...

The modern rock outfit The Neighborhood follow-up their breakthrough "Sweater Weather", which went to #3 on this chart as sticks in at #6, with their next single "Afraid" at #45...
In one of their more enjoyable articles, Billboard last week reminisced about the last 25 years of the Alternative/Modern Rock chart, with a list of the 100 top songs of the quarter-century. British progressive rock group Muse claims two of the top three of that list with "Uprising" and "Madness", and they are back at #47 with the third single from their excellent 2nd Law set, "Follow Me"...

...and now on to the radio format sub-charts...

On the Mainstream Rock radio panel, Avenged Sevenfold check in for a fifth week on top with "Hail To The King"...

Crossing over to this format are Imagine Dragons with "Demons", a track they've taken to #2 on the Modern Rock chart...

..and at #40 is metalcore band Killswitch Engage with the second single from their Disarm The Descent album, "Always". The first, "In Due Time", made it to #26...

Meanwhile, on the Modern Rock/Alternative chart, "Royals" is at #1 for a fifth week...

The sole entry at #40 is by the Arctic Monkeys, with a record I've been hooked on all week, "Do I Wanna Know?", from their awesome album A.M.. In 2005, they went to #7 with "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor"...

Over at the Triple-A (adult album alternative, or "hipster rock") format, Lorde's "Royals" also is on top for a fourth week...

Dropping in at #25 is Sir Paul McCartney with his "new" song, "New"...

Newcomers Saints Of Valory arrive at #27 with their first, "Neon Eyes"...

The last debut here at #30 is John Mayer with "Wildfire"...

At the harder-edged Active Rock radio panel, Avenged Sevenfold dominate for a fifth week with "Hail To The King", while the aforementioned "Always" by Killswitch Engage is the high entry at #38...

Arriving at #39 is West Virginian nu-metal act Bobaflex with "Bad Man"...

Soil dig in at #40 with "Shine On", the first single from their Whole album...

Finally, on the older-skewing Heritage Rock chart, "Hail To The King" is on top for a third week...

There's one debut here at #24, and it's Danish heavy metal stars Volbeat with "Lola Montez"...

That's it for today's rock party...I'll be back in an hour and a half with the newest on R&B radio. Rock on!
