Twostepcub's Biggest Hits of 2024: Part Two - #90 - #81...

Hey folks, I'm back with round two of my recap of the biggest songs on my weekly personal music chart for 2024. You can catch up with the rest of the series by clicking here. And away we go...

#90 - The Emptiness Machine - Linkin Park
from the album From Zero (2024)
          2scchart peak: #5 (one week)
Weeks on the chart: 11 (still charting)
          Points: 976

Well as I mentioned in part one Linkin Park finally settled on a new co-lead singer with Emily Armstrong formerly of the group Dead Sara, coming hard out of the gate with this huge rock radio hit. It didn't come though without a little controversy over Emily's ties to Scientology and more notably convicted actor Danny Masterson. She's kept it vague, but nevertheless musically this was a nice new direction for the group without tarnishing the legacy of Chester Bennington.

#89 - Love Like That - Phillip Phillips
from the album Drift Back (2022)
          2scchart peak: #40 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 22
          Points: 979

The winner of season 11 of American Idol back in 2012 has had a low key but lasting career in the adult pop/world, and this song chugged along for weeks on the older-skewing radio charts, ending up making this the lowest-peaking song on my top 100, squeaking into the top-40 for a couple weeks. It's nice background and definitely like "She's Somebody's Daughter" from the last segment engineered for wedding receptions where they serve unseasoned food.

#88 - Your Place - Ashley Cooke
from the album Shot In The Dark (2023)
          2scchart peak: #9 (one week)
          Weeks on the chart: 15
          Points: 981

One of the better surprises of this year, where newcomer Cooke proves that women simply tell better stories in country music, with a Aldean-ish pastiche without the posturing is so damn refreshing. It's a shame her next move was to team up with cultish roid-head Brantley Gilbert for the failed single "Over When We're Sober", stalling her career for now.

#87 - Home - Good Neighbours
from the EP Good Neighbours (2024)
          2scchart peak: #24 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 21
          Points: 983

This song from low key indie duo Good Neighbours, including Norwegian pop princess Sigrid's band member Oli Fox, got a boost from TikTok, and besides the annoying whistle is decently wistful.

#86 - Make It All Right - The Offspring
          from the album Supercharged (2024)
          2scchart peak: #14 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 17
          Points: 990

Amidst the returns of Green Day and blink-182, pop-punk contemporaries The Offspring didn't get as much attention, but their latest album is a much more fun listen, and they've got their melodies tight with this rock radio gem.

#85 - Back Then Right Now - Tyler Hubbard
          from the album Strong (2024)
          2scchart peak: #25 (one week)
          Weeks on the chart: 24
          Points: 994

After ditching deadweight cultist Brian Kelley and Florida Georgia Line, Tyler has carved a respectable solo career so far, scoring his third big country radio hit with this heavy-handed but earnestly passable fodder. (Again, some of these are here on staying power alone)

#84 - "Chevrolet" - Dustin Lynch featuring Jelly Roll
from the album Killed The Cowboy (2023)
          2scchart peak: #22 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 21
          Points: 1012

Yeah, here's an embarrassing one. This rip-off of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" (distilled with Unkle Cracker) utilizing this year's Pitbull award winner for singing on any thing Jelly Roll showed up on quite a bit of worst hits of the year lists, but I guess this wore me down enough and lingered on the country chart so much (as Dustin's records do) that it made it here. So there. It could be worse. It could be the Machine Gun Kelly/Jelly Roll record.

#83 - The American Dream Is Killing Me - Green Day
          from the album Saviors (2024)
          2scchart peak: #3 (four weeks)
Weeks on the chart (in 2024): 12 (was on for five weeks in 2023)
          Points: 1018

The lead single from pop-punk icons pulled no punches, attacking the fallacy in capitalistic cultists in our nation that unfortunately have won around freaking round. But at least we can go out dancing.

#82 - Lunch - Billie Eilish
from the album Hit Me Hard and Soft (2024)
         2scchart peak: #10 (two weeks)
         Weeks on the chart: 13
         Points: 1019

After lulling us with her sublime ballad from the Barbie movie, the standard-waver for the "others" returned with this deliciously lascivious lesbian come-on stomp that had us cheering her on, even if radio didn't know what to do with it.

#81 - "Run Away With Me" - Cold War Kids
from the album Cold War Kids (2023)
          2scchart peak: #10 (two weeks)
          Weeks on the chart: 16
          Points: 1020

The indie-rockers from Long Beach are back with this fun sing-along that's charming without being cringe.

Tomorrow I'll have this week's top 100, then I'll be back with the comeback of the Piano Man, grunge vets explore astromony, and the most famous DUI of the year.
